Fairtrade in business

81% of UK consumers believe businesses must step up to take responsibility for fair and sustainable supply chains. The Fairtrade Movement has been working for the last thirty years with businesses, producers in their supply chains and consumers to put values of fairness and sustainability into practice.

Over 40 leading UK retailers, brands and suppliers including Ben & Jerry’s, Clipper, Co-op, Greggs, M&S, Sainsbury’s, Tate & Lyle Sugars came together in Fairtrade Fortnight 2025 to issue a united call to action: It’s time for industry to step up and Do it Fair.

Campaign Action

Fairtrade addresses key issues from climate justice to rights of producers to a living income and the empowerment of women through specific projects and advocacy.

MP Pledge & Civic Action

In 2024, GFA invited MP Dame Caroline Dinenage to sign a pledge supporting fairer trade. She committed to working with campaigners in the constituency and in Parliament, backing policies that ensure fair pay, climate justice, and fair governance in trade. She was one of 100 MPs to do so.

GFA encourages people to write to MPs about issues such as climate adaptation funding and corporate accountability in supply chains.

How You Can Help

There are simple, effective ways to support Fairtrade:

  • Buy Fairtrade products to help farmers earn more and invest in their communities.
  • Spread the word by telling others how Fairtrade makes a difference to farmers lives and empowers them to address the challenges of climate change.
  • Write to your local newspaper or use social media to raise awareness.
  • Contact or meet your MP to put fairness in trade on the political agenda. Tell her why fairness in trade matters to you.
  • Ask election candidates about their stance on trade justice and what they will do make trade fair.
  • Join peaceful public demonstrations.
  • Sign petitions for changes that will help Fairtrade producers. Latest campaign “Brew it Fair” petition is here.
  • Keep up to date by signing up for Fairtrade’s newsletter.
Fairtrade Campaign Themes

Trade Justice & Climate Justice

Fairtrade advocates for global trade systems that deliver fairness, sustainability, and climate resilience for farmers and workers.

The Current Campaign theme is “Brew It Fair”. It seeks fair treatment for the millions of people who produce the tea in the 100 million cups we drink every day, in Britain.

But many of the people behind our daily brew face poverty, unsafe working conditions, and the mounting threat of climate change – leaving them unable to plan for their future.

Changing the lives of the people behind the tea we drink requires businesses and politicians to uphold their responsibilities, listen to what these communities need and commit to rebalancing the global trade system we all rely on.

So, we are asking the UK government to protect human rights, collaborate for change and honour their international climate finance commitment. You can sign the petition here.

Living Wage for Cocoa Farmers

Launched in 2019, this campaign calls for living incomes for cocoa farmers in West Africa. It has since expanded to include coffee and banana producers.

Fairtrade Flowers & Women’s Rights

The “Dignity for All” programme in Ethiopia empowers women and young workers in the flower industry through training and union support, funded by multiple international partners.

Child Labour & COVID-19

The pandemic disrupted education and increased risks of child labour. Fairtrade responds with targeted projects and advocacy for stronger child protection laws.

Who Made My Clothes?

Inspired by the Rana Plaza disaster, this campaign challenges the fashion industry to be more transparent and ethical. It includes education on Fairtrade cotton, support for the Fashion Revolution movement, and promotion of ethical brands.

Our Local Fairtrade Group

Fairtrade Communities have groups of volunteers who work with their local Council, businesses and local organisations, to promote Fairtrade products and an understanding of the work Fairtrade does to bring Fairtrade to more farmers and workers.

Who We Are

Gosport Fairtrade Action (GFA) is a volunteer-led group established in 2006, representing schools, businesses, community groups, and local councillors. In collaboration with Gosport Borough Council, GFA helped Gosport become a Fairtrade Borough in 2008 and has maintained that status, with the latest renewal in August 2023 and the next due in 2026.

Our Mission

GFA aims to promote Fairtrade products and explain how the Fairtrade movement enables producers to:

  • earn a fair income which provides a decent living for their families,
  • enjoy a safe working environment which respects their human rights, free from discrimination,
  • develop their whole communities with premium-funded projects of their own choosing
  • train in business practices
  • learn and develop sustainable farming practices to adapt to the challenges of climate change and environmental degradation,
Our Activities

GFA’s main activities include:

  • Hosting events during Fairtrade Fortnight
  • Creating educational displays on Fairtrade and climate issues
  • Participating in local community events
  • Promoting Fairtrade products and providing tastings
  • Giving talks and working with schools, businesses, places of worship, and voluntary groups
  • Running fun, engaging activities to raise awareness

You can see examples of some of these activities in the archives’ accounts of each year’s activities, here.

Campaigning

Beyond local promotion, GFA campaigns on broader issues like sustainability, workers’ rights, and climate justice. For example, they support the international Loss & Damage Fund, collaborate with groups like Friends of the Earth and Global Justice Now, encourage residents to write to MPs, and participate in peaceful demonstrations.

Resources

GFA offers locally adapted resources tailored for schools, places of worship, organisations, and events—such as exhibition materials, talks, and presentations, including PowerPoints with videos. Contact GFA to discuss how they can support your activity.

Getting Involved & News

From 2006 to 2019, GFA published illustrated annual newsletters (available here). Current updates are shared through the website’s “Activities” and archive pages.

YOU’RE INVITED TO GET INVOLVED

whether helping at events, spreading Fairtrade awareness or signing petitions.

Schools & Colleges

You can start with showing a video in Assembly in Fairtrade Fortnight, use Fairtrade resources in various areas of the curriculum and go all the way to becoming Fairtrade School.

Encourage Teaching & Learning about Fairtrade

Introduce Fairtrade and the climate crisis through assemblies, lesson plans, and activities. These tools help students connect how Fairtrade supports farmers in the global South who are already hardest hit by climate change—even though they contributed least to it. Lessons span subjects like Geography, Economics, Citizenship, and PSHE. Resources include lesson plans and videos from the Fairtrade Foundation, along with locally produced materials from GFA.

Become a Fairtrade School

Schools can earn national Fairtrade School Awards, from Fair Aware to Fair Active and all the way up to Fair Achiever. Full details and guidance are available via the Fairtrade Schools programme. Full details, guidance and resources are available via the Fairtrade Schools programme, where you can also sign up to receive their newsletter with the latest teaching resources, education campaigns, and schools’ news directly to your inbox.

How GFA Can Support Your School

Gosport Fairtrade Action (GFA) offers practical support including:

  • Connecting you with experienced teachers who’ve worked toward Fairtrade School status.
  • Providing ideas, local resources, talks and helpful links tailored to your school’s needs.

Places of Worship

Simply by choosing to use Fairtrade products you can make a real difference to enhancing the lives of people across the world. Your place of worship could play a role in introducing people to the part they could play, enlisting their compassion to help Fairtrade empower communities to build their own successful futures.

“Speak up for people who cannot speak for themselves. Help people who are in trouble. Stand up for what you know is right, and judge all people fairly. Protect the rights of the poor and those who need help.” Proverbs 31:8-9

Fairtrade Churches in Gosport

While many Gosport churches previously held Fairtrade status, by 2025 none appear on the Fairtrade Foundation’s map— most likely because they haven’t renewed. Fortunately, renewal is simple, quick and straightforward.

Becoming a Fairtrade Place of Worship

To become (or renew status as) a Fairtrade Place of Worship, churches need to meet two core requirements:

  1. Use Fairtrade products (at minimum: tea, coffee, sugar) and share Fairtrade information with the congregation.
  2. Integrate Fairtrade values into church life—e.g. during Fairtrade Fortnight or via displays, events, stalls, or sermons.
How to Apply
Inspiration: What Gosport Churches Have Done

Churches have hosted producer films, displays, talks, youth activities, coffee mornings, tea, cake, chocolate and wine tastings, and even made Fairtrade bunting. These initiatives can build global connections with real people in an entertaining way and make the cause meaningful.

They also encourage user groups to choose Fairtrade products when booking space.

Resources for Fairtrade Fortnight

Gosport Fairtrade Action provides resources—worship materials, videos, posters, leaflets, newsletter content—via Churches Together in Gosport. They’re happy to send these directly to your church.

There are several Christian websites which provide specific resources related to Fairtrade. Try Christian Concern for One World for a range of prayers and worship materials some specifically selected/written for the current Fairtrade theme, others relating to Fairtrade more generally – all inspiring!
